What is a chimney cowl?
A chimney cowl is a terminal fitted at the top of a chimney pot, flexible flue liner or manufactured flue system. Cowls vary considerably in design and function. Therefore, the product should be selected for the chimney, appliance, fuel and problem rather than appearance alone.
Weather protection
A suitable rain cap or weathering cowl can reduce direct rain entry. At the same time, it must maintain enough free space for combustion products to discharge.
Bird and debris protection

Chimney cowl installation and fixing methods
The cowl must be secured with the fixing system for which it was designed. Adhesive, silicone sealant or fire cement should not replace the required mechanical fixing.
Strap or band fixing
A stainless or galvanised strap passes around the outside of the pot. It is then tightened to hold the cowl in position.
The band must bear against a sound and suitably shaped part of the pot.
Clamp or leg fixing
Adjustable legs or clamps bear against the pot. Tighten each fixing progressively. This keeps the cowl central and avoids excessive point loading.

Check the pot and surrounding masonry
Confirm that the pot is stable and free from significant cracking. Check the flaunching and surrounding stack for loose material.
Prepare the cowl at ground level
Assemble adjustable components at ground level where possible. Set the fixing approximately to size before moving the cowl onto the roof.
Position the cowl centrally
Place the cowl onto or into the pot, sleeve or liner connection. Follow the orientation stated by the manufacturer. Confirm that it sits level and does not foul an adjacent terminal.
Engage the mechanical fixing
Fit the strap, clamp, legs, bolts or liner connector. Make sure the fixing bears against a suitable part of the pot rather than a decorative lip or weak edge.

Alternate between fixings where several screws or legs are used. Avoid overtightening. Excess force can crack a clay pot or distort the cowl.
Check clearance and free movement

Hi I have a log burner with an external flue and the birds are now coming down the chimney so would like a cowl to stop this.
For an external log burner flue, you would normally require a bird guard or anti-bird rain cap designed for a twin-wall insulated flue system. It is important that the terminal is compatible with the exact make and diameter of your existing flue, as fittings are not always interchangeable between manufacturers.

I am interested in 2 SS chimney cowls. My query is regarding the base or prolongations to hold the cowl to the pot. Are they bendable if there is not an exact fit against the pot? Is cement always necessary/advisable?

The stainless steel fixing legs are usually slightly adjustable and can be carefully shaped to suit the chimney pot where the fit is not exact. They should not, however, be heavily bent or forced, as this could weaken the fixing.
Cement is not normally required where the cowl can be securely fixed using the supplied straps or clamps. It may be advisable on an uneven or damaged pot, but it should support the fitting rather than replace a secure mechanical fixing.
We would also recommend checking that the chimney pot is sound before installation and, where necessary, having the cowls fitted by a competent installer.
