Chimney cowls for wood burners and open fires

Wood-burning stoves and open fires both burn solid fuel, but they do not necessarily require the same chimney cowl. A stove normally operates as a more controlled appliance connected to a defined flue, whereas an open fire draws a much larger volume of room air through the fireplace opening.

A restrictive guard or undersized terminal can affect the performance of either system. Mesh, weather covers and internal baffles should leave sufficient open area for the intended application.

Can a chimney cowl stop downdraught?

An anti-downdraught chimney cowl may help where wind pressure around the roof causes smoke to be forced back down the flue. It will not necessarily correct insufficient chimney height, a blocked flue, poor room ventilation or an unsuitable appliance connection.
